San Diego’s first Ukulele Festival will benefit the Coronado Playhouse.  Beg, borrow or buy a Ukulele at the Festival and sing along.  The Festival will take place at the Coronado playhouse Pavilion at the Ferry Landing on Saturday August 28th and Sunday August 29th from 10AM until 5PM. Look for the big white tent, or listen for the fun ukulele sound.

The two day event with host workshops, Ukulele venders, Ukulele art by Kathy Michalski, and performances by some of the best know names in the Ukulele world as well as the local strumming group Kealani’s Ukulele Pickers and the Yorba Linda Strummers and other strumming groups.

The allure of the ukulele is that it is an incredibly easy instrument to play, but you can spend the rest of your life developing your Ukulele skills.

Look forward to taking a workshop or hearing a performance by the following ukulele headliners:

Lyle Ritz is known throughout the world as one of the original “masters” of the ukulele. Mr. Ritz has performed and recorded with the ukulele for over 40 years.  His proficiency at the ukulele jazz chords has gained him respect from all of the music industry.

Charles Kiaha (Uncle Charlie) is a graduate of Kamehameha School and has a wealth of knowledge pertaining to Hawaiian music and the Hawaiian language. We are indeed fortunate to have Uncle Charles Kiaha and his duet singing partner, Ilima for our ukulele festival.  His “hands-on workshop on Hawaiian strumming for various songs is incredible informative and enjoyable. His second workshop on vocal arrangements for men and women with Ilima (Hawaiian Songbird) helping with the women’s singing parts.  Demonstrating the technique of blending women and men’s singing voices in Hawaiian songs.

Jumpin’ Jim Beloff is an instructor and writer of some of the best loved ukulele song books as well as an attractive book, “Visual History of the Ukulele”.  Jim’s workshops are loads of fun and have inspired people with no musical background to come away playing and enjoying the ukulele.  Jim will be introducing his new book “Jumpin’ Jim’s Ukulele Island” with 31 tropical tunes at the Festival.

Janet Klein the Ukulele Chanteuse who looks like she came from a time warp of the 20’s will enchant her audience with obscure songs of the 20’s and 30’s. With a coy and come come-hither wink she delivers her wonderful parlor songs.

Ninety six year old Bill Tapia the icon of the ukulele world taught Hollywood stars Clark Gable, Shirley Temple and Jimmy Durante among others how to play the ukulele and entertained troops in World War One and World War Two.

The 2004 Ukulele festival is a tribute to those who have given Ukulele players the fostering, encouragement and lifelong love of learning the Ukulele with friendship, affection and love.

Aloha….We’ll see you there!
